3) What is meant by a drought tolerant lawn?
Don’t be fooled by the term ‘drought tolerant’. For a lawn to be ‘water hardy’ at best, you need to have a good water holding soil- the thicker the better. See the installation page for more information.
4) My lawn has been watered but looks dry in the summer months, what can I do?
A tip to promote healthy lawn
The number 1# problem for lawns in summer is that watering does not soak into the soil as readily: instead it runs off the lawn.
Why
Usually caused by using a lawn mix soil base containing peat and sawdust, this problem occurs when these components break down into wax and oils coating each grain of sand, then reducing the ability of water to penetrate through.
Solution
Joondalup Turf Farm has experience with these kinds of situations, and recommends that you solve the issue by using several wetting agents alternatively on the lawn every 2 weeks until the water freely soaks through.
5) When is the best time to water my lawn?
A tip to prevent disease and insect attacks
It is better to water your lawn in the mornings as it is cooler and will allow for more water to soak into your soil. NEVER water your lawn in the evenings as some of the water streams off over night promoting disease and insect attacks.
6) How do I know the perfect balance to ensure I do not over-water my lawn?
A tip to stop summer wilting
Train your lawn to grow deep roots by only watering twice weekly in summer. But add another 5 minutes to these times in a heat wave (i.e. if the temperature exceed 38oC),
7) How do I prevent weeds growing in my lawn?
A tip to prevent weeds
A green, healthy and fully covered lawn will prevent most weeds. However if you have too many weeds and hand weeding is too much to ask, there are many safe chemicals to spray. Be sure to solve the problem when it is small, instead of leaving weeds to grow on their own.
8) When should I fertilise my lawn?
A tip to promote health and longevity in lawn
Be sure to fertilise your lawn lightly every 6 weeks with a follow up a week or two later. Late May is highly recommended, to keep your lawn looking good over winter.
9) My lawn is covered by shade, in a high traffic area, how do I prevent any issues?
A tip to overcome potential problems early
Lawns that are growing in heavy or part shade and lawns that see heavy traffic can lead to growth issues. To prevent issues ensure you mow lighter, as more leaf area can more easily pick up sunlight. It is also a good idea to prune overhanging branches where possible
10) Do lawn beetles cause problems for lawn?
A tip for healthy lawns
Beetle threats have long been over-rated, as a few beetles can actually be beneficial to your lawn. Beetles aerate your soil and provide a natural source of fertiliser.
Problems caught early can be easily turned around, please contact Joondalup Turf Farm for advice and be sure to give your lawn the attention and care it deserves.
