Self-Installation in Depth

All Joondalup Turf Farm customers are provided with a comprehensive ‘Lawn Care Plan’ booklet. The ‘Lawn Care Plan’ booklet is packed full of essential tips in installing and maintaining your new lawn.

A few basic tips are also provided below:

1) Quality water-holding soil

A long lasting lush lawn, which saves you on future water use, is a lawn that has been laid on a quality, water-holding soil. Joondalup Turf Farm can provide advice on a cost effective solution. ‘Brickies yellow sand’ (not garden yellow sand), is perfect for under your lawn (6cm to 14cm or thicker), as it contains a good amount of water holding clay.

If your ground levels don’t need too much fill, you can use a thin layer (5mm to 10mm of ‘pure clay’ or a similar product, ‘Till’ into your soil 6cm to 14 cm deep, you can hire a rotary hoe to make it easy. This gives you the same result: a long term water holding storage bank.

Fertilisers

Pure manures and compost (without peat or sawdust) are ideal. Use these lightly before rolling out your new lawn.

* IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not get caught buying landscapers or a lawn mix soil (see Expert Tips & FAQ Page), as these will cause problems down the track.

(For full sun areas only)

2) Level surface, level playing field

The surface where the turf is to be laid out must be flat and level to the slope of the land. In future this will also help stop scalping by the lawn mower.

Add 15-20mm to the thickness of your roll on lawn from the top of the brick paving down to the soil level, to ensure your lawn is not higher than your paving.

Lay your lawn in an overlapping pattern (like bricks in a brick wall). After laying the lawn, use a small, 20 inch plate compactor. REMEMBER: ‘till and plant’, not ‘compact and plant’.

3) Let your lawn take; effective watering

Watering is very important in the first 2- 4 weeks after you lay out your new lawn, to ensure you lawn takes root and is given the best possible chance.

4) Maintenance & early issue prevention

Remember not to over water and fertilise your new lawn accordingly. Joondalup Turf Farm recommends fertilising for the first time after your first or second mow. Train your lawn to grow deep roots by only watering twice weekly in summer. In spring and autumn, it is best to water weekly or one week after any rain.

Your new lawn, will give you decades of joy and memories, for only a few hours of fitness during the year: a win-win situation!
